HARRIS COUNTY, TX – Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey announces completion of the Flashing School Zone Sign Program for Low-to-Moderate Income (LMI) and Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) areas.
“This was a much-needed upgrade to improve safety as the kids make their way to and from school,” said Commissioner Tom Ramsey. “I couldn’t be more proud of the progress made, and will continue to work with our school districts to ensure this standard is met throughout all the school zones in Precinct 3.”
This $1.3 million program brings 90 flashing signs to 18 schools in four school districts across Precinct 3. Previously, the school zones had signage without lights that displayed school zone speeding limits for specific timeframes. The new flashing signs bring more attention to school zone rules throughout each day.
Completion of the program within LMI and SVI areas does not mean the end of flashing sign installation for the Precinct. Precinct 3 will continue to bring flashing signs to additional schools through a second safety program, the Safe Routes to School Program, which is currently underway.
Both the Flashing School Zone Sign Program and the Safe Routes to School Program are identified as part of the County Transportation Plan.
