Precinct 3 and MUD 50 Team Up to Install 580 Street Lights Throughout the Barrett Community

HARRIS COUNTY, TX – Harris County Precinct 3 is expanding street lighting throughout the Barrett community with the addition of 582 new lights, thanks to a partnership with Harris County MUD 50.

The $240,000 project is designed to improve visibility and enhance safety for residents traveling through neighborhood streets. For Alice Dangerfield, MUD 50 president, the lights are especially important when it comes to school safety.

“We need them for the safety of the community and families going out at night,” said Dangerfield. “And then the children, they catch their buses, it’s dark a lot of times and they have to walk to the bus stop. That was one of our main concerns. We appreciate the Commissioner for even considering Barrett to put lights, and we really appreciate the partnership so much.”

Among the total number of lights are 99 new galvanized poles being installed with 483 lights added to existing power poles. Once Precinct 3 completes installation, MUD 50 will then maintain the lights.

“Pragmatic solutions and strong partnerships help us deliver these improvements for the communities we serve,” said Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey. “I appreciate MUD 50 for working with us to deliver more lighting throughout the Barrett area and invest in the long-term quality of life for residents.”

Street lighting can reduce evening vehicle crashes by up to 38 percent and decrease vehicle-involved pedestrian injuries by 42 percent, according to the Federal Highway Administration. The project reflects Precinct 3’s ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure and school safety. View a video about the Barrett street lighting project by visiting here.
